Preface

The Semantics of Causative Events:from the Perspective of Event Integration by Dr.Jinmei Li makes solid contributions to the study of events,both in theoretical terms and in terms of empirical research.The work is highly original in that it develops a new theoretical model of how speakers of different languages verbalize events of varying degrees of internal complexity.This model is then applied to a contrastive analysis of English and Mandarin Chinese,with a specific focus on the distinction of extended causation versus onset causation.Studying two very different languages—British English and Mandarin Chinese—provides an interesting opportunity for disentangling language—specific and more universal patterns of perception and expression of causation.Furthermore,previous studies of extended and onset causation that have investigated Mandarin Chinese have done so only to a limited extent.This study therefore breaks new ground both with regard to linguistic theory and the empirical work involved.

The broad theoretical framing is well-grounded not only in recent works in linguistics from different theoretical traditions(including both formal linguistics and cognitive linguistics),but also in cognitive psychology and the history of western philosophy from the past several centuries.In particular,it reflects a very thorough intellectual engagement with the linguistic literature on causation.

The empirical research consists of studies conducted both in China and in the United Kingdom.It draws on existing methodologies that have proven useful to the cross-linguistic study of event structure and causation,and extends these methodologies with the use of new video clip stimuli that allow for answering new research questions.The research that was conducted in considerable depth is presented in clear language,and the author has taken great care to render the Chinese examples in a way that will be understandable even for readers who are not fluent in the language.

On the whole,this book makes a substantial contribution to the field of linguistics and even the philosophy of language.It generates findings that are relevant beyond the languages that are investigated in the given empirical studies.Specifically,the research ties together issues of conceptual structure with topics concerning the morphosyntactic organization and substance of typologically different languages.The work undertaken here can thus serve as a valuable impulse for further studies that could investigate the verbalization of extended and onset causation across other languages.

Abstract

Talmy(1976)proposes that there are two different temporal relations between a causing event and its caused event.Onset causation occurs if a caused event begins after the causing event,while extended causation occurs if a caused event happened simultaneously with the causing event.Li argues that in this book onset causation and extended causation are two subtypes of direct causation.It is recognized that both an onset causal chain and an extended causal chain can be conceptualized as a macro-event.Li sets forth a new theoretical model of how speakers of various languages verbalize events having varying degrees of internal complexity—a four-dimensional model for event integration,which is a new method for investigating the language-thought interface by analyzing participants’ conceptualization and lexicalization patterns of dynamic events.This four-dimensional model falls into two parts:conceptual event integration and syntactic integration.Conceptually,four dimensions determining which events can be conceptualized as an integrated macro-event are identified,including spatial and /or temporal integration,participant integration,event-type integration and relation integration.Syntactically,the morphosyntactic counterpart proposed as realizing conceptual event integration is the mono-clausal construction derived from multiple clauses.

Based on this event integration model,taking English and Mandarin speakers as research subjects,Li employs an elicitation experiment and contrastive analysis to explore the event integration of onset and extended causal chains,investigating the effects of the temporal variable and the presence of an instrument or not on speakers’ event-number classifications and syntactic encodings of onset causal chains and extended causal chains.This book explores whether there is any difference in the mapping from the conceptual event integration to syntactic integration between extended causal chains and onset causal chains within and between Mandarin Chinese and English.The research focuses on four kinds of isolated instances of causal chains:instrumental onset causal chains(I+OCC),non-instrumental onset causal chains(I-OCC),instrumental extended causal chains(I+ECC)and non-instrumental extended causal chains(I-ECC).

李金妹，天津师范大学副教授、硕士生导师，阿姆斯特丹自由大学认知语言学博士，北京航空航天大学外国语言学及应用语言学博士，获天津市高层次创新人才引进博士来津专项资助。主要研究方向：认知语义学、应用认知语言学。发表学术论文十余篇，出版学术专著1部，主持湖北省教育厅社科基金重大项目1项、湖北省教育厅“十二五”规划项目1项，参与美国自然科学基金项目1项、国家社科基金一般项目3项。

本书以事件融合模型为理论框架，以汉语使用者和英语使用者为实验对象，使用实验诱导法和对比分析法，探讨时间变量和工具变量对说话者关于初始因果链和持续因果链的事件数量分类及句法表征的影响，研究在汉语使用者和英语使用者小组内部，以及汉语使用者和英语使用者之间初始因果链和持续因果链从概念事件的融合到句法的融合之间的映射有无差异。
